Man United show true grit in second half comeback vs Atalanta

October 22, 2021

Cristiano Ronaldo, Old Trafford, Oct 20, 2021.

It seemed another hugely disappointing defeat was inevitable for Manchester United. But Cristiano Ronaldo proved himself to be the inevitable in the end.

It’s nights like these United fans live for. United welcomed Italian side Atalanta in their third UEFA Champions League group stage game. For United it was a must win game to keep their hopes strong for progressing to the knockout stage. Atalanta with 4 points from their opening two games would be glad to take a point at Old Trafford.

An unforgettable UCL night filled with grand range of emotions. A classic Manchester United come back. Icing on the cake is definitely the winner coming from none other than Cristiano Ronaldo!

It’s only the group stage and there are hurdles to overcome. United go top of the group with 6 points from 3 games. Atalanta and Villarreal both earned 4 points; and Young Boys are still in the mix with 3 points. United play away against Villareal and Atalanta, and Young Boys at home.

Paul Scholes had words of caution for United despite such a spectacular comeback. Scholes is convinced the victory hides fundamental problems, for example the disconnect among team members on the pitch. He believes against better opponents it could be disastrous for United.

Indeed, the first half performance was worrying. Second half United is the real United. That’s the Manchester United fans want to see. On the pitch, it’s about doing everything better than opponent and United in the second half showed how it’s done. It remains to be seen if this spirit carries on. Consistency is key. This victory shows the team can succeed.
