Manchester United are back into action after a long time. 15 days to be exact. For United fans it’s an eternity. They face Newcastle at St. James park.
Preview: Newcastle vs Manchester United
It’s an appropriate late Boxing Day fixture. United’s next opponent has been been a much talked about recently, due to Newcastle takeover by literally too rich Arab owners. However, the club is sitting at 19th place in the table, looking at eventual relegation.
A fitting occasion indeed. The soon to be the next Man City/PSG/Chelsea of football world, with strong determination to buy success with generous cash flow, are upto prove themselves against the top club in English football. It’s a verdict – whether they deserve to stay in first division football, or sent to the take the long route back with riches to spend.
United (it will always mean Manchester United) will look to secure all 3 points. Ralf Rangnick would be very happy to have Edinson Cavani and Raphaël Varane available for selection.
After 15 days without playing a match, United will look to deliver a energetic performance. However, lack of football also result in lack of sharpness. Anything less than 3 points would be dire.
The Match: Newcastle vs Manchester United
Newcastle to no one’s surprise really, took the lead through Saint-Maximin strike, after a defensive mishap. Again, to no one’s surprise. And predictably, started playing better only after going behind on the scoresheet. Inconsistency is consistent.
Lack of sharpness and team chemistry, especially up front – United looked poor in the first half. Newcastle like any other team were on top of their game when they are up against United.
Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes looked as awful as they did 15 days ago vs Norwich. Slow, uninspiring and wasteful. Among the bad performers, which consists of the whole team these two stood out for me.
Harry Maguire alone had possession of ball for more than 10 mins in the game, doing nothing!

United pulled one back in the second half, thanks to Edinson Cavani. But overall, the team player below their potential.
Out of form right now, and out of top 4 if this continues.
United looked a totally different side comparing the one that beat Newcastle on Rolando’s fairytale return. The team is really, really out of form and it needs to change soon.
You can put Manchester United team against a third division side and still they will struggle. Strangely, United play relatively better against tougher opponents. They will struggle if they are favorites. As for Newcastle, getting relegated anyway.
Next, United host Burnley on December 30, 2021.
