“Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In” is a must-watch for United fans

June 14, 2021

The man, the myth, the legend – Sir Alex Ferguson needs no introduction. “Never Give In” – the newly released documentary presents compelling life stories of the celebrated football icon.

Never Give In: The Film

“Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In” features reflections and recollections by our beloved Sir Alex himself. The film is produced by Andrew Macdonald, John Battsek and Allon Reich; and co-produced by DNA Films and Amazon Prime Video. The film is directed by Sir Alex’s son Jason Ferguson.

The film was released for streaming on May 29, 2021. Its runtime is a little more than 2 hours.

The world was gripped with horrible news on May 5, 2018: Sir Alex, the legendary United manager had been taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. Earlier that day, he had collapsed in his house after suffering a brain hemorrhage. Jason Ferguson, his son, called in the emergency services.

Football communities worldwide expressed their concern and wished for his recovery, and thankfully, after successful surgery, his condition gradually improved. Once again, the man had overcome adversity through his perseverance, grit and fighting spirit.

The Story

Recovering from a life-threatening brain injury was an incredible feat. In his post-recovery phase, Sir Alex is once again making public appearances and he’s often seen attending football games – mostly Manchester United games, of course!

In the film, the former United manager recounts vital stories of his life in and out of football to his son, Jason. Stories of his childhood, his family, his triumphs and his failures reveal his life to the wider audience like never before.

Interestingly enough, filming “Never Give In” also helped our boss end a long-running dispute with his former player at Aberdeen and Manchester United Gordon Strachan. The conflict started during the 80s. After decades, the two had met for lunch and finally made peace at Sir Alex’s son Jason’s request.

Besides Strachan, five family members including Sir Alex’s wife Cathy Ferguson, their sons Jason, Mark and Darren appear in the film. Sir Alex’s brother Martin Ferguson is also among the interviewees. His former players Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona appear in the film as well.

Reception

“Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In” premiered at the 2021 Glasgow Film Festival. It was released in UK cinemas on May 27, 2021, and became available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on May 29, 2021.

United faithful has described the film as extraordinary and insightful. Indeed, the film is a gift to United fans. It’s an invitation to take a trip through memory lanes by borrowing Sir Alex’s own experiences.
