Eric Cantona has once again signed for Manchester United! This time not as a player, but as an advocate of fan share ownership scheme.
Cantona has joined the “Sign For United” campaign initiated by Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) – according to the organization’s latest press release. The campaign aims to introduce fan share ownership scheme at Manchester United.
Fan Share Ownership
A fan share ownership scheme enables fans of a football club to obtain exclusive rights to purchase club shares. This ensures that fans have their own stake in club ownership.
In particular, the 50+1 rule means that the fans hold majority of voting rights at a football club.
Under German Football Association rules, football teams in Germany are not allowed to compete if private investors hold more than 49 percent stake of a football club. This means in Germany, fans actually do own all the football clubs.
Sign For United
On June 25, MUST launched “Sign For United” campaign. This independent campaign aims to introduce fan share ownership scheme at Manchester United FC.
“Sign For United” campaign can trigger fundamental change to the ownership model currently implemented at United. If successful, the campaign can also trigger other supporters’ clubs to initialize similar campaigns. It has the potential to start a new chapter in English football history.
Mr. Cantona is the first person to “Sign For United”. The man has once again showed he has United in his blood. He is an inspiration to all the fans, and his involvement in the campaign will be very influential when the it goes live. United fans worldwide are encouraged to follow Eric’s lead.
On campaign website, United supporters (and football supporters in general) can register as participants of the campaign. Once registered, participants will receive confirmation email. Subsequently, all important updates about the campaign will be sent via email.
