Lack of consistency, a position dilemma and visible disinterest – probably it’s for the best if Anthony Martial moves on. It would not be the end of Martial FC, and given his potential, a move away from Manchester United can actually benefit both Martial and the club.
A Promising Beginning
Anthony Martial joined Manchester United on the deadline day of the 2015 summer transfer. The transfer fee made him the most expensive teenager ever. Most United fans had barely heard of him before, and the transfer fee caused a lot of negative media noise. United manager at that time, Louis Van Gaal, introduced Martial as a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. He asserted that United is the club for Martial to continue his development.”
Anthony Martial announced himself at Old Trafford in the most spectacular fashion by scoring a wonderful solo goal against Liverpool.
In his first season, Martial made a great impression. Most memorably, his winning goal in the dying seconds of the FA Cup semi-final against Everton will go in United’s history books. United went on to win the tournament. Martial showed that he can be an integral part of the squad rebuild undertaken by Louis Van Gaal.
Ups and Downs at Manchester United
There has been never been any doubt about Martial’s talent. Safe to say however, there have been ups and downs during his time at United in the past 5 years.
In his second season, Martial lost his role as the main forward after the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimović. The lack of playing time really affected Martial. His ambition to establish himself as a top player at Manchester United took a hit. It is a very tough job – to be number 9 at United. Perhaps too big for Anthony Martial at that time.
Zlatan took the United no. 9 shirt for himself. Martial, who originally played as a left-winger at AS Monaco, was given no. 11 instead. A suitable switch as the number had been famously worn by United legend Ryan Giggs.
Jose Mourinho eventually replaced Zlatan Ibrahimović with Romelu Lukaku as the club’s main striker. It was not until Lukaku’s departure did Martial get back his coveted no. 9 shirt.
In the meantime, Manchester-born and bred Marcus Rashford had established himself as a crucial player at United’s left flank. Man United had also moved on from Jose Mourinho. The Old Trafford hot seat has been occupied by Ole Gunnar Solsjkær since.
Martial’s Uncertain Future
Martial did well under his first full season under Ole. He had his best season at United, scoring 23 goals in 48 matches. United however remained in the hunt for a world-class striker. Edinson Cavani was signed by United the following season. Cavani is a temporary solution to United’s need for a goalscorer in chief.
Ole Gunner Solskjær‘s recent comment on Cavani in a press conference, quote, “He gives us a number nine position.” pretty much sums up the fact that the club doesn’t see Martial as the long-term no. 9. This completely goes against Martial’s aspirations.
It’s also evident that after Edinson Cavani’s contract expires at the end of the 2021-2022 season, the club aims to replace him with a world-class striker. Big names such as Harry Kane and Erling Halland have been brought up by the media. Not what Martial would like to hear.
Martial’s option at United is to accept a less significant role than what he aspired for 5 years ago. No doubt, he could actually be an excellent backup striker and left winger at United. On the other side, not seems he has had enough. His lack of intensity and lethargic performances indicate his growing discomfort in the United shirt. The conflict between the club’s plan and his own aspirations is becoming more and more apparent in his performances.
The coach, the owners do see Martial as important. He has a good contract. A move away, either temporary or permanent, would mean Martial can chase his aspirations in a club offering him ample opportunity. At the same time, it would also enable United to offer a similar contract to a world-class striker instead. This change can benefit both Martial and Manchester United.
What’s Next?
Despite all the criticisms and complexity surrounding his future, there is no doubt that on his day Martial is unplayable.
Do you think it’s time for Martial to move on? Does a loan move make more sense? Do you think United will regret selling Anthony Martial, and his best is yet to come? Please share your opinion.
